The U.S. Defense Department became interested in the idea of forward sweep with the widening application of composite materials in aircraft design. With these new materials, engineers could build aircraft of lightweight structures and immense rigidity. The advocate of this program was Air Force Colonel Norris J. Krone, Jr. who had studied forward sweep throughout his career.
